You are a party to the conversation yourself — you may legally record it without informing the other party, as long as it’s not for unlawful purposes.
If you are not a party to the conversation, then secretly recording it can amount to interception, which is generally prohibited under Section 5 of the Telegraph Act, 1885 and Section 69 of the IT Act, unless you have legal authorization (e.g., from police or a court).
